I recently completed Berserk '96 and thought that it was really good. I watched it mostly because I heard that it inspired the Dark Souls games, the only one of which I have played is Elden Ring, which is a really good game in and of itself. While the anime left off right where the plot was getting good, I still think that it did a good job of introducing the world and characters. As far as I have heard, the Berserk manga is supposed to be the best manga of all time. I have not read it, but I do know that the original creator passed away and it is now being written by a friend of his. Whether the integrity of the manga is being preserved by that friend I know not, but I definitely want to check the manga out. Regardless, I am here to talk about what I watched, the anime.
I think that the premise is very interesting: a mercenary gets his life spared and loses a fight so he has to join a band of mercenaries. Due to the aforementioned mercenary's (Guts is his name) fighting prowess, the mercenary band rises to prestige within the kingdom and eventually the band is granted titles within the kingdom. This is all happening because the leader of the band wants to become a king. Guts, satisfied with the work he did for the band, leaves to wander. This causes the leader of the band to go mental and get thrown into the dungeon and his band of mercenaries reduced to thieves aspiring to their old glory. After some time, Guts returns to them to recapture the leader of the band from the dungeon, which they do, and then the leader, now reduced to skin and bones with his tendons cut, tries to kill himself but releases the apocalypse from the egg he was wearing around his neck and becomes some overpowered demon and kills all of the mercenary band but Guts. The show is very dark and gory, but it is enjoyable none the less. I personally wish to pick up the manga to see where it goes. There had been a remaster of it in 2016, but they used really bad 3D animation that makes me want to throw up, so I didn't watch it. All in all, good show, would recommend.
